Ron Whitton and his grandson Chas Dana captured the Unlimited and overall victories Saturday in the 40th annual SNORE 250 in Primm.

PRIMM, Nev. –Arizona contractor Ron Whitton combined his efforts with grandson Chas Dana here Saturday to capture the unlimited and overall victories in the 40th annual South Point SNORE 250.

In an event which started about 90 cars just north of Buffalo Bill’s, the 70-mile course was typical of races presented by the Southern Nevada Off Road Enthusiasts considering the brutality of the layout of an event known of its deep history.

Complete with the event’s first winner Fritz Kroyer who officially flagged off the first cars, the SNORE 250 lived up to its billing on the land situated about 30 miles south of Las Vegas with a start-finish line inside a closed course just north of Buffalo Bills.

Whitton and Dana recorded a total time of 4:59.26 to collect an easy victory while also collecting $525.

The Scottdale resident Whitton and his grandson had a flawless day with only one slight setback.

“The only problem we had was when the bolts came out of the manifold,” said Whitton. “We had no flat tires.”

However, while the Whitton-Dana team sailed across the desert free of setbacks, some of the event’s top names weren’t so lucky.

TJ Flores, who has won the Mint 400, Dusty Times 250 and the Vegas to Reno, could have taken the overall crown were it not for a flat tire on the third lap while leading the race.

Then, just to show that the course played no favorites, Class 1600 kingpin Rob MacCachen had his day slowed by a broken steering box in what proved to be an event complete with everything ranging from the weather to a challenging course and a sour economy.

However, even with the sagging economy and the rest, SNORE put together another stellar event paying out significant prize money while culminating the weekend with its awards banquet at Primm Valley Casino.

One example that it pays to race SNORE came in Class 9 where brothers Ryan and Eric Tyler took home about $5,500 for their efforts while Cody Rash pocketed $2,000 for his efforts in the same class.

Mike and Jenny Hanson continued to dominate Class 10 taking home a total of $5,900 while Justin Dean Smith grabbed $5,000 for winning Class 12.

Adam Householder won Class 1 to collect $2,000 with a time of 5:00.28 to outrace the popular Flores who teamed with Las Vegas chiropractor Dr. Kevin Colan who turned a 5:01.21 for runner-up money of $475.

Justin “Bean” Smith powered to the Class 12 victory with a 5:27.35 to score a 25-minute win over Bryan Freeman while Michael and Jenny Hanson took another Class 10 victory.

Long-time Las Vegas plumber Aaron Hawley picked up $2,100 when he turned a 5:58.21 in the highly-competitive 1600 competition to beat Orlo Cox and the third-place finisher MacCachren.

Thomas Morales zipped to the Class 5 crown, while popular Raul Sorano took a seven minute victory over Patrick Dailey to take the 5-1600 while Ryan and Eric Tyler took an eight-minute victory over Cody Rashin the Class 9 competion.

Jeff Harris grabbed the Class 7 championship while Brandt Anderson won Class 7S, Brock Hersam captured Mini Metal and Monte Tibbitts ran to the Class 8 crown.

Other winners included Sean Hadley in 18; Greg Crew in 15; Beau Binkowsi in 13; David Hendrickson in Stock Bug; Eric Ludian in 1450 and Kevin Ellis in 3000.

SNORE’s next event is the Rage at the River in Laughlin Dec. 12. Further information can be found at www.snoreracing.net.

Fritz Kroyer, who won the first SNORE 250 in 1970 before also winning a pair of Mint 400 events, flags off the first vehicle in Saturday’s 40th annual race in Primm.
